All actions have consequences, good or bad, for a single individual or for whole communities and peoples. We can act doing something, doing nothing, doing what is right or wrong... with completely different consequences.
Each act demands ponderation before decision and action. Each one of us is responsible for his/her acts and for his/her indifference. Sometimes indifference means that we are conniving with an act that could be avoided with simple actions.
Yesterday I received a mail from International Amnesty appealing to sign a petition to avoid one more unhuman punishment of a young girl who was a victim of a crime (rape) and is being treated as a criminal. More than once I cooperated with International Amnesty and other human rights organizations. Once again I answered positively to the appeal signing this petition. The more signatures we can get the stronger will be the pressure upon the Maldives' authorities so the sentence upon that girl may be declared null or mitigated.
I can't cross my arms and do nothing if I have the opportunity of doing something. I hope that many others feel the same.
For some reason, this petition is not on the main site of International Amnesty. In the last two years it has been the Spanish unity of International Amnesty that sends me the mails and information. The petition is on the Spanish Amnesty page. Nationality is irrelevant in these cases. I'm Portuguese but Humanity has no frontiers!
Below is the link to the petition and a presentation («The Last Second Before Reality») about "individual choice and responsability", in general, and about the stoning of women, in particular, a punishment that goes on in too many countries.
Though we shouldn't think about human rights, and particularly about women rights, only in specific days like this (Women's International Day - March 8), I considered this day a good opportunity to do something.
