VOLATILIS

When the hands fly together with thought and imagination

Gheorghe C. Varga is a young Romanian artist that I met at Deviantart about a year and a half ago. What called immediately my attention was the originality of his style, a style simultaneously meticulous and ethereal. In drawings like Volatilis, the lines seem aleatory and chaotic in a close up look, but seen from a certain distance as a whole the effect is completely different. Volatilis is the perfect image of movement and freedom.
In more classic drawings, like Michelangelo’s Thoughts, Restoration of Man, Marble Dreams and others, what is more remarkable is the atmosphere he creates. These drawings really allow us to travel in time and an insight into the mind of the characters represented. Emotion goes along with the perfection of the traces.
The recent drawings of the Cathedral of Timisoara are amazing especially in what concerns the work with the perspective and the relation between the surroundings and the building. The observer outside the drawing may have the sensation of being an observer moving in the real place.
Drawings like Elegie, The Inside Dreamer or Life Based on Theory impress at first sight for the amount of information and the deep emotion that irradiates from each detail and the whole. None of these drawings can really be seen in thirty seconds. It is needed much attention and sensibility to have the privilege of sharing a meaning that is mostly emotional and spiritual.
Life Based on Theory is strikingly well achieved. It called my attention since the first time I saw it on Deviantart though I never commented it, precisely because it “talked” deeply to me saying so many things that I couldn’t put in words. And by now it will remain without words. Probably they are not needed at all.
I’m deeply grateful to Gheorge C. Varga for allowing me to use his drawings, in this post, in the mini-application and in the video The Truth Inside, which follows below. It’s a privilege to be his friend and follow his work.

THE TRUTH INSIDE (is the road not taken)
A poem by Robert Frost, The Road Not Taken, with an epilogue by São Ludovino, illustrated with drawings and paintings by Gheorghe C. Varga (aka Fluplay) and photography by São Ludovino.
Soundtrack: Lunch by The Durutti Column from the album Keep Breathing, 2006.

The Road Not Taken

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveller, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim
Because it was grassy and wanted wear,
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I marked the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,
I took the one less travelled by,
And that has made all the difference.

Robert Frost (March 26, 1874 – January 29, 1963 / San Francisco)
Epilogue
(to The Road Not Taken)
And here begins the real voyage
The one that begins inside a soul
Passes through so many souls
And finally arrives to his harbour-soul
To never stop finding
Roads not taken
Day after day
Around the million corners
Of a single beloved soul...

OFFERINGS

Give and receive

Words and images are the simulacrum of what is untouchable and intransmissible... and they deceive quite well.

OFFERINGS

So, you decided to offer me your mirages
Hoping that I believe
In each trembling line of heat and light?
And I do
For an eternity that lasts as long as the trail of a shooting star.
Why don’t you offer me shooting stars, instead?
I would believe them forever.

So, you are convinced that the flowers
You gave me long ago
Wouldn’t wither ever,
Even without a single drop of your eyes’ dew?
The flowers are withering with you.
In the last petals
Only remains the dew of a forgotten soul.

So, you tell me you've build mountains and plains
And rivers of silver and blue
Just to make me stay in the corner of your dreams?
And I stayed
Until your dreams went away without me.
While I watch you going, I offer the mountains to the sea…

And while I behold the sea
You behold me
Telling me in a forgotten language of shiny words
That the sea always returns everything back.
Now it’s your turn to wait
Now it’s your turn to not believe me… in vain…
